Meth Addiction Treatment & Rehab Options

A report from the National Institute on Drug Abuse reveals that in the United States, around 964,000 people over the age of 12 had a problem with methamphetamines during 2017. This was a significant increase over 2016 when an estimated 684,000 people were suffering. These individuals could benefit from a methamphetamine addiction treatment program consisting of medical detoxification, therapy and counseling.

Steps in the Process

Detox is the first step and involves eliminating harmful substances such as methamphetamine from the body. During detoxification, users get help managing their withdrawal symptoms and learn to overcome cravings. Through all of this, individuals learn that it is possible to perform day-to-day activities without the need for drugs or alcohol. Accordingly, they will be better prepared for the treatment that follows.

Through counseling, you will learn to overcome the mental, emotional and psychological damage that occurred because of your drug use. You will also be able to address any underlying mental health issues that may have contributed to your substance use disorder in the first place. Finally, you will learn coping mechanisms that help prevent you from falling into the same pattern once you leave the rehab facility.

Meth is one of the most difficult substances to overcome. If you or a loved one is suffering from addiction, it is imperative to seek out professional treatment. Methamphetamine users can rarely stop on their own and often need an intense, inpatient program to help them beat their addiction.

Staging an Intervention

Many crystal meth users deny they have a problem and therefore resist getting help. In that case, staging an intervention could help that person realize that he or she has a problem. During an intervention, those with a substance use disorder are forced to face their problem head on. They will then have to make a decision as to whether they will continue their behavior.

You may feel intimidated by the thought of staging an intervention on your own. This is especially true if your loved one has a tendency to become violent or hostile. You might also hesitate because you are not quite sure what to say, particularly if you have tried talking with that person before.

Fortunately, you do not have to go it alone when one of our experienced intervention specialists can help. An intervention specialist knows how to overcome many of the challenges that friends and family members often face. The goal during any intervention is to show methamphetamine users how their habit affects those they are closest to. Once faced with this fact, many people are then motivated to seek addiction treatment.

Inpatient Treatment Options

Inpatient therapy is often the preferred recovery method for those suffering from a methamphetamine use disorder. That’s because meth users tend to suffer from more severe and frequent withdrawal symptoms, making them highly susceptible to relapse. Inpatient treatment provides a secure environment in which to recover. It can take anywhere from 30 to 90 days to complete an inpatient program depending on the level of addiction and other factors.

At the Green Mountain Treatment Center, part of the Granite Recovery Centers group of facilities, an inpatient treatment program allows you to take advantage of numerous programs such as:

  • Anger management therapy
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Dialectical behavior therapy
  • Trauma therapy
  • Experiential therapy
  • Holistic addiction therapy

Outpatient Services

An outpatient treatment program may be better suited for someone who is only an occasional meth user. However, those unable to enroll in an inpatient program could benefit as well. During an outpatient program, you will attend therapy part time while you continue to work and take care of family obligations. To be successful, you will need to devote between 10 and 15 hours of your time each week toward recovery.

Many clients begin with inpatient treatment and then gradually transition to outpatient care as they progress. Others will exclusively undergo outpatient treatment once they have completed medical detox. Outpatient programs are also ideal for those who have already completed an inpatient program some time ago and have relapsed or are in danger of doing so.

When it comes to recovery at the Green Mountain Treatment Center, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. That’s why we are always happy to customize our treatment plans to suit each person. Allow us to come up with a custom treatment plan that is just right for you.

Our Outpatient Services

What type of outpatient services can you expect from facilities that are part of the Granite Recovery Centers group? Many of the services we provide on an outpatient basis are also ones that we offer to our residents. A few of those services include:

  • Individual therapy
  • Anger management therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Grief and loss therapy
  • 12-step program

As with inpatient care, we provide custom outpatient treatment plans that are flexible enough to change as your needs do. In addition, we offer the same level of service to each client regardless of inpatient or outpatient status. Our goal in any case is to help you overcome your meth use and achieve full sobriety.

Medical Detoxification

Before deciding between inpatient and outpatient treatment, most methamphetamine users will need to undergo medical detox. Medical detoxification is the process in which crystal meth and other harmful substances are safely eliminated from the body. Withdrawing from meth is an intense process that can come with some severe side effects. Consequently, it is not something you should attempt to do on your own.

You can detox from meth on either an inpatient or outpatient basis. Even so, you should always do so under the direct supervision of a medical professional. This involves having health care personnel monitor you consistently for signs of adverse reactions. Doctors and nurses can prescribe medications to help you better manage your cravings as well as the side effects associated with withdrawal.

There is no set time frame for detoxification. Some people require only a few days while others could need as long as two weeks. That’s why we always customize our treatment plans to fit your needs. Once you have completed detox, you are then ready to take on a more intensive treatment program.

Counseling and Therapy

The next step following detoxification is counseling and therapy. Through a variety of counseling and therapy programs, you will learn to identify some of the underlying causes of your addiction. As such, you will also be in a better position to overcome those issues.

During your time with us, you will learn to identify the triggers that might cause you to desire using drugs again. We will show you useful coping mechanisms to help you deal with stressful situations. In that way, you can avoid relapse and maintain your newfound sobriety for life.

Professional, licensed counselors lead our individual and group therapy sessions. These sessions are tailored toward your own individual needs and are always confidential. Our goal is to make you feel comfortable so that you will open up about your problems. When you feel relaxed and understood, you are more likely to benefit from the counseling and therapy programs we prescribe.

Effective Therapies

Many people begin using drugs as a way to deal with past trauma or abuse. Through programs such as our post-traumatic stress disorder therapy, you can learn ways to deal with painful situations without the need for meth.

One of the most common therapies used in addiction treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT. Studies have shown that CBT is very effective at treating addictions as well as many of the co-occurring disorders that lead to substance use disorders in the first place.

Narrative therapy is another tool that is often used at Granite Recovery Centers. Through narrative therapy, you will learn to tell your story with the goal being to discover how your experiences may have affected your meth use. As part of narrative therapy, you will also learn how to control your future stories. You will learn new habits that help you adopt a more positive, healthy lifestyle.

Aftercare and Relapse Prevention

The idea of overcoming a meth use disorder is overwhelming for many. What’s even more overwhelming is the thought of remaining sober indefinitely. Our aftercare and relapse prevention programs give people hope that it is possible to lead a drug-free life.

Having the right support system in place is a key factor in maintaining sobriety. This is why we recommend a variety of aftercare programs such as Narcotics Anonymous and Crystal Meth Anonymous. Groups such as these help recovering individuals connect with others who share their same struggles. In that way, former meth users are able to encourage and help each other as they strive to meet a common goal.

Through 12-step programs such as these, individuals work on self-improvement and making restitution to those who were injured by their substance use. At the same time, the groups give people an outlet in which to safely express their fears and anxieties. The programs are confidential, free and available to anyone who would like additional support.

Advanced 12-Step Programs

Some 12-step groups offer additional assistance in the way of a same-gender sponsor or mentor. Men and women have different reasons for addiction and also face their own unique relapse triggers. By having someone of the same sex provide support, individuals are more likely to reach out whenever they face challenges.

Another program that has been proven widely successful is Self-Management and Recovery Training, or SMART. A SMART program incorporates many of the same techniques included in a 12-step program but also adds in a few elements of CBT.
